Electronic Invoicing System (EIS)
MRA's platform for issuing tax invoices and keeping stock records. Point-of-sale terminals are activated with MRA, report every sale through the EIS API and print a QR code from MRA's validation signature. Certified terminals can queue sales offline and sync later. It is a national reporting system, not a Peppol network.

Electronic fiscal devices (EFDs)
The earlier regime, which EIS will replace. EFDs send daily summary Z reports by FTP over mobile connections and print on MRA-branded paper.

Malawi's EIS is a real-time receipt reporting system. A POS or invoicing system must be activated with MRA, report each sale and print the QR code MRA returns. Developers can start from MRA's EIS developer guide.
MRA has extended the transition more than once. Its April 2026 announcement identifies VAT-registered taxpayers and a 1 May 2026 rollout date. Check any subsequent MRA notice for changes; the older FAQ's pilot wording is not a reliable implementation schedule.
